Cest lors de sa première visite en France à loccasion du spectacle Danses et chants des femmes du Maroc organisé à Paris en septembre 1999 que Cherifa Kersit a pu imposer son art et ses interprétations du patrimoine poétique et rythmique de sa région natale, le Moyen Atlas marocain. Cette jeune fille de paysans, née en 1967 à Tazrut Mu Uxbu dans la région de Khénifra, a commencé à se produire dans les mariages et les fêtes de son village. Sa rencontre avec Mohammed Rouicha la menée, malgré la réticence de ses parents, à intégrer le milieu professionnel de la chanson. Cependant, elle avait toujours chanté en compagnie dautres artistes, tels Rouicha, Mgheni, Aziz Arim, et elle navait jamais enregistré une chanson en son nom. Il faut attendre sa venue en France pour la voir se produire seule et enregistrer son premier album Berbère Blues. Avec cet album, Cherifa réhabilite, par sa performance et sa voix puissante, lart des cheikhats (chanteuses) resté longtemps méprisé par un certain public. Lentremêlement de la « débauche » et du féminin dans ce style musical, né dans les transformations de la société marocaine et en particulier dans les centres urbains, a oeuvré à sa marginalisation. Après une période où elle a joué le rôle daccompagnatrice des grands chanteurs du Moyen Atlas, Cherifa saffirme donc comme une chanteuse-cheikhat autonome et impose son style personnel.

This is during her first visit in France at the festival Danses et chants des femmes du Maroc organized in Paris in September 1999 that Cherifa Kersit imposed her art and interpretations of the poetic and rhythmic heritage of its native region, the Middle Atlas (Morocco). This daughter of peasants, born in 1967 in Tazrut Mu Uxbu in the area of Khnifra, started to perform at weddings and village festivities. Her encounter of Mohammed Rouicha leads her, in spite of the reluctance of her parents, to integrate a professional environment. However, she had always sung in company of other artists, such as Rouicha, Mgheni, Aziz Arim, and she had never recorded a song under her own name. We had to wait her arrival in France to see her record a first album Berber Blues. With this album, Cherifa rehabilitates, by her performance and her powerful voice, the art of the cheikhats (singers), a long time scorned by a certain audience. The intermingling of the "vice" and the female in this musical style, born in the transformations of the Moroccan society and in particular in the urban centers, worked to its marginalisation. After a period of accompanying the main singers of the Middle Atlas, Cherifa evolves like an autonomous cheikhat and imposes her personal style.
